When working with perishable flowers time, temperature, and training are the most valuable commodities. From the moment our flowers are cut from the fields there are measures taken to improve their lifespan. Not all flowers are cared for in the same way – here are a few differences in how some of our more popular flowers are cared for before they even reach our flower shop:
- Our Roses travel via a 40-degree refrigerated truck the entire trip from the airport to our local flower shop. A majority of the flowers are trucked from Miami, Mexico, or various parts of California. When flowers are cut at the farm and refrigerated, we are essentially slowing down their metabolism in order to expand their vase life, and transporting them in refrigeration essentially puts them into “hibernation”.
- Our house plants get transported from mid-Florida and travel via truck with a translucent roof to allow sunlight throughout their journey. Our Spath don’t respond well to colder temperatures (they’re house plants – not refrigerator plants!) so we do not allow them to travel with our cut flowers that enjoy their cooler time!
- Our tropical arrangements include orchids, Ginger, and Birds of Paradise, which are usually flown in direct to our store packed in shredded newspaper and fitted with water tubes. Tropical flowers prefer a warmer, humid environment but are also very fragile and the shredded newspaper acts as a buffer for rough box handling.
Once the flowers arrive at our Houston florist, we cut them using a specially designed two-way cutter that slices the stem and doesn’t crush it (we need the end of the stem as clean of an edge as possible as that is how water gets up to the blooms. After they are cut we place them in the first of 3 solutions we use in order to provide our 7-day guarantee - Hydration solution. This solution helps clear the stems of any blockages in order to increase the amount of water they can intake after being dry-packed for 3-5 days. After they are hydrated outside of the cooler for several hours, we transfer them to a holding solution and place them in the cooler until our floral designers are ready to begin creating your Houston flower delivery! When you place your order and our designers begin preparing the vase for a design we mix in a special solution in order to maximize the vase life of all of your blooms.
All of this care and handling leads to long-lasting flowers and happy customers but it is only one piece of the 7-day guarantee puzzle. If florists rely on local wholesalers and do not have a direct source for their flowers, they aren’t able to ensure the age or care their flowers receive.
